The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that dental professionals treat dental burs and endodontic files as single-use items, as these items are difficult to adequately clean and sterilize. According to Spaulding classification, dental burs and endodontic files are critical instruments that require cleaning and sterilization for safe reuse. Despite strict adherence to manufacturer IFUs for proper reprocessing, patient safety risks remain, as IFUs may be vague, onerous, or incomplete. This webinar will provide a comprehensive review of infection prevention and control risks associated with dental burs and endodontic files, evidence-based best practices, and reported adverse events.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Apply the Spaulding classification to dental burs and endodontic files.
  2. Evaluate the risks and benefits of reusable dental burs and endodontic files.
  3. Enhance infection control practices, education, and purchasing decisions within the dental setting.
