Coin-sized device detects measles virus in saliva

Measles is one of the most infectious airborne viruses worldwide. An inexpensive and effective vaccine is available, but Measles is common in developing countries and sporadic outbreaks also occur in developed countries, primarily due to non-vaccinated people. New research published in Advanced Functional Materials describes a novel point-of-care biosensing device capable of detecting measles virions in human saliva, which may help with efforts to control viral spread. This systematic review and meta-analysis of 47 clinical trials enrolling over 6600 patients who underwent various medical procedures ranging from 30 minor elective procedures (over half were dental procedures) to 17 moderate orthopedic and general surgery procedures, compared pain control outcomes and complications between opioid-dependent and opioid-free analgesia. EPA orders e-commerce platform Wish to stop selling illegal disinfectants.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered ContextLogic Inc., doing business as Wish, to stop selling several unregistered disinfectants through their e-commerce marketplace. The products are unregistered disinfectants being sold in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Such practices have been particularly problematic during the COVID-19 pandemic, and EPA will continue to take enforcement actions such as this ‘Stop Sale’ order to protect public health. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., adopted the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation to preferentially recommend the use of specific flu vaccines for adults 65 years and older, including higher dose and adjuvanted flu vaccines.
